Endurance cycle ergometry tests performed at a sub‐maximal work rate elicit peak physiological and symptom responses in adults with cystic fibrosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Time to symptom limitation (Tlim) achieved during constant work rate tests is considerably more responsive change than measures commonly recorded ramp-based tests, such as peak of oxygen uptake and maximal (Wmax). There limited literature on the use of, physiological responses to, cycle ergometry in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). The results this study provide evidence that test, when conducted at 80% Wmax, elicits appears be safe adults CF. For clinicians prescribing exercise an intensity approaching or equivalent Wmax a non-laboratory-based setting, consideration needs given level supervision patient monitoring required.

Symptoms, lactate and exercise limitation at peak cycle ergometry in adults with cystic fibrosis.
The purpose of this study was to investigate symptoms, lactate accumulation and limiting factors at peak exercise in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. In total, 104 CF adults attending an adult CF centre and 27 controls performed progressive cycle ergometry to a symptom-limited maximum. Measurements taken at peak exercise included: heart rate, ventilation, oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide output, oxy...
متن کاملComparing peak and submaximal cardiorespiratory responses during field walking tests with incremental cycle ergometry in COPD.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Field and laboratory-based tests are used to measure exercise capacity in people with COPD. A comparison of the cardiorespiratory responses to field tests, referenced to a laboratory test, is needed to appreciate the relative physiological demands. We sought to compare peak and submaximal cardiorespiratory responses to the 6-min walk test, incremental shuttle walk test ...
متن کاملEmployment and work disability in adults with cystic fibrosis.
BACKGROUND As a result of prolonged survival, more patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) participate in the labour force. The aim of this study was to evaluate their education, occupation levels and risk factors for work disability. METHOD 207 patients answered a self-administered questionnaire about their educational level and work status. Independently, medical records were reviewed for illnes...
متن کاملValidation of activity questionnaires in patients with cystic fibrosis by accelerometry and cycle ergometry
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to validate physical activity questionnaires for cystic fibrosis (CF) against accelerometry and cycle ergometry. METHODS 41 patients with CF (12-42 years) completed the Habitual Activity Estimation Scale (HAES), the 7-Day Physical Activity Recall questionnaire (7D-PAR) and the Lipid Research Clinics questionnaire (LRC) and performed an incremental ex...
متن کامل[Peak expiratory flow rate in the management of cystic fibrosis]
OBJECTIVE: To verify the role of peak expiratory flow, measured through portable meters, as an alternative test to assess pulmonary disease in cystic fibrosis. METHODS: Forty-nine patients aged five to 19 years old in stable health condition and able to perform the peak expiratory flow maneuver were included. In the same visit, Shwachman-Kulczycki score was recorded. Linear regression was used ...
